Comments about Hurt:
I get way more out of the NIN version than I do from the Cash one. I grant that if you watch Cash's music video along with the song then you might get teary-eyed; however, if you didn't know that he was going to die, and didn't see his old face and soul, then you would think he's just speaking some sad words to a melody, which is essentially how I feel about his performance. I truly believe that the newer rendition of 'Hurt' is only so popular because of the context. I did listen to NIN perform it before I heard Johnny Cash do it, so I suppose you could call me biased in that respect. Anyway, there's my vote for NIN over Cash. I hope you enjoy them both.

I respect the fact that Johnny Cash covered this song with a video portrait of his life to it right before he died, (after all they say imitation is the most sincerest form of flattering) So apparently Cash really liked Trent's song. However I still much prefer Reznors original version of his song to Cash's version. And of course I'm a die hard NIN fan for over 15 years now, I was listening to hurt NIN back in the early 90's and I'll give it to Cash the song had odvious meaning to him about his life, but I still like NIN better.

Cash butchered this song. He totally ruins it, turning it into a pop hit, stripping it of all emotion and meaning. Cash spat on a masterpiece.

i will say this in short, i adore both cash nd nin, however, i prefer cashes version over nins, its the reasoning behind the lyrics, cash sang it as a message to the ones he loves, but nin, someone said was about self destruction, and you couldnt feel emotion in that song, n im not gunna listen to the whole album just to understand why he sings that one song.

I don't want to start an argument or anything but in response to Nick from Sydney. Trent said Cash owned the song in his own right not saying that his version is better. Nin version is about self plessure turing into self destruction and letting everyone that matters down because of your greed and wanting to start over and make it up to them. Cash's is about selling out for the respect of others and that he now is rebuilding to recreate who he is in the life he has left.

I never used to like the Nin version until I bought the Downward Spiral Cd. The album creates a whole new meaning to the song. I love both versions but I admit the Cash version is pushed by its video. If you don't watch the video and base it all on the music I give it to Nine Inch Nails but as in the video presentation I give it to Cash. Please, dont judge the NIN version without listening to the whole album or you won't understand the true meaning of the song. And also don't judge the Cash version by the video. I love them both but the feeling, emotion and pain in Trent's voice makes the Nin Version better by a Hair but you gotta love both versions.

Maybe this is the only cover that's better than the original.

Cash for sure, Nine Inch Nails even said that Cash now "owned the song"
