Cover vs. Original

Knowledge

Let's put it this way, Op.I. are gods of ska-punk. It's a shame they couldn't build on their album and make more music. But then we wouldn't have Rancid.... you can't always get what you want I guess. Green Day's version isn't fast enough for me, it's more of a slow jam recorded live at Op.I.'s old stomping grounds, Gilman Street. A nice tribute but nowhere near better than the original.

Op Ivy were the band that should have relaunched punk onto the world. Their version is perfection. If we have to sit through a cover of Op Ivy let it at least be Rancid doing it.

Well, the Op Ivy version is obviously better, but judging by the way the cover's done I would say they were probably stoned when they did it. You can tell Billie Joe isn't putting any effort into singing it.

I agree with the fact that the song does sound better faster, but at the same time, Green Day idolized Op Ivy when they were starting out. I like this version just as much as the original because it's a good song all around.

Yes, Operation Ivy wrote this song after all. And after that, you're just trying to emulate that sound. I believe Green Day failed. Miserably. They totally changed it (which can sometimes be good) but they did a terrible job. Slowing it down was probably the last thing they should've done. I don't like the singing; it's supposed to be fast, with the music, which it can't be. The bassline would sound a lot better fast, it's pretty much the lamest guitar ever, and without the fast drumming the song loses the last bit of energy it had left. I think Op Ivy named their album Energy for a reason; and Green Day desecrated that.

Even when Greenday was good (which is this album) they could never come close to op ivy and tim armstrong and they never will

Operation Ivy did it the fist time and they did it with the true punk taste or distaste that makes them great. Definately Op Ivy all the way.
