Days
The Kinks has always been hard to cover. The songs by Ray Davies, and The Kinks performances are very personal, not to say odd. Artists who have tried have seldom been successful. However Kirsty MacColl did a magnificent and charming cover of "Days" back in 1989. Though I am a hardcore Kinks-follower since 64, my vote this time goes to Kirsty!

Comments about Days:
Let's be clear here we are comparing the great with the sensational, but the vote for the merely great has to go to the Kinks whilst Kirsty walks away with the sensational

I feel this is one instance where the patented Kirsty "wall-of-voices" sound actually cuts against the intimate grain of the song to some defree -- and she's one of my all-time favorite artistes. Ray, by a nose.

Simply the greatest cover of all time, in my humble opinion.

Kirsty - without a doubt.

Sorry. I forgot that Days only appears on the special 3-CD edition of VGPS (and the one with the black/white albumcover that was released in Sweden in 1968). You can listen at Days on Kronikles.
