The version by Love is my favourite (between Jimmy's and Love's, haven't heard the original)

The Leaves version has a pulse I love.

I saw Hendrix in 1969 Denver (I was interviewed in UniVibes "Jimi Plays Denver") and no doubt he was and always will be untouchable in his class. Comparing song versions is not comparing musicians per se. I remember the Leaves 45 record I had of Hey Joe and that bass line! We all learned that bass line even Noel Redding used it. Hey Joe was covered by The Leaves, The Standells, The Surfaris, Love and The Byrds and was credited to Billy Roberts, a folk singer in early 1960's California. The Leaves version was hot in its time and still is.

Hendrix was King of the Electric Guitar. The Leaves aren't even close.

Jimi's version was more popular because Jimi was more popular, The Leaves did this song great and which other one? ...hmmm? I personally like Wilson Pickett's version best, if you haven't heard it... ahhh, I see a worthwhile investment in your near future:)

Deep Purple has a version too. Pretty good, but not as raw and rockin' as the Leaves ... my choice all the way.

Two other great versions: Fever Tree and The Music Machine both from the 60s...
